Superscribes
& Scribblers
Each year the PTA publishes a book in
June which features both art work and written work of every Staples
student. Volunteers are needed to type (on the computer) and proofread.
The work can be done at home.
Time Commitment - The volunteers are needed from mid March
through April. The project time is intensive, but brief, and rewarding.
Volunteers Needed – One Chair and about 25-30 dedicated
volunteers.
Teacher
Appreciation
Each year the PTA hosts a teacher appreciation week.
Some of the week’s activities include a luncheon served to teachers and
administrators, a Sweets Day, and plenty of opportunity for student
participation. Volunteers are needed to donate side dishes, desserts, and
to help with setup and cleanup. Some creative people are also needed to
make favors for the teachers.
Time Commitment: Teacher recognition week is normally the
first week of May. Preparation should begin around the 2nd week
of April.
Volunteers Needed:
2 chairs per school and many volunteers.
R oom
Parents
Room parents are responsible for planning the four
class parties, collecting student funds at the beginning of the year to
cover the parties and an end of the year teacher’s gift. Room parents
can also be asked to chaperone on field trips. In grades K-2 room parents
are responsible for calling class parents in the event of an unscheduled
early dismissal.
Time Commitment: Ongoing throughout the year with spurts of
activity around class parties: December, Halloween, Valentines and
Year-end.
Volunteers Needed: Differs per grade
but on average 4 room parents per class.
Campbell's
Soup Labels
Collect, cut, sort, tabulate and send in labels for
qualifying items. This is still a relatively new committee for the Staples
PTA. Most of the work is done at home.
Time Commitment: A small time commitment ongoing throughout the
year.
Volunteers Needed: This committee only needs a few volunteers.
Student
Enrichment
The cultural enrichment committee plans, secures and
implements periodic assembly programs for the schools. This is one of the
most rewarding positions as the students’ appreciation of the programs
is evident immediately during and/or after the presentations.
Time Commitment: Ongoing throughout the year.
Volunteers Needed: This committee has one chair at SSES and two
co-chairs at HKMS. In addition the chair at SSES could use a few
volunteers to help orchestrate the programs.
Book
Fair
The Book Fair is held each year in October.
Volunteers are needed to set up book tables, act as
cashiers and help students with the selection of the books during the
bookfair. Help is also needed to do publicity and accounting. This
committee can use as many as 25 volunteers.
Time Commitment: Planning begins in October and continues until
the bookfair is held around the third week of November.
Volunteers Needed: This
committee can use as many as 25 volunteers.
Fund
Raising
In order for the PTA to operate and
enrich our schools with many valuable programs, income needs to be
generated. This committee will investigate fund raising programs and make
suggestions which will be reviewed and approved by the PTA. Help will be
needed with publicity as well as the actual projects themselves.
Time Commitment: Some of the projects are ongoing and some are
very short term.
Membership
Help
is needed to solicit new members for the PTA through the schools from
teachers and parents alike. Membership is also solicited at the New Parent
Tea, Parents Night, and Kindergarten Orientation. Additioinally help is
needed in keeping an accurate record of the PTA’s membership.
Time Commitment: The bulk of memberships are received by the end
of January.
Volunteers Needed: 1 Chair and a couple of volunteers.
Gift
Wrap Sale
The gift wrap
sale takes place in the beginning of the school year. Volunteers are
needed to help with publicity before the sale. We also need volunteers to
help tally the orders and distribute the wrapping paper. It only happens
once a year.
Time Commitment: This is a short term project and doesn’t
require an ongoing commitment.
Volunteers Needed: Two
co-chairs per school, as well as 5 to 10 other volunteers.
Hospitality
This
committee provides refreshments for Open House Nights as well as
occasional PTA programs. People are needed to make arrangements for food
donation, set up tables and set out food.
Time Commitment: A small time commitment ongoing throughout the
year.
Volunteers Needed: One
chair and several volunteers.
P arenting
Committee
Plan implement and advertise programs
of interest for PTA members and the community at large. Secure speakers,
facility and refreshments for the event. Plan four or five per school year
or as budget allows.
Time Commitment: Ongoing throughout the year with more intense
periods around time of program.
Volunteers Needed: Two
co-chairs, as well as several volunteers.
Picture
Day
Did you know that the PTA coordinates your childrens’
school portraits? This committee is involved in selecting the photographer
and coordinating the specifics of picture day at both SSES and HKMS.
Time Commitment: At time of school portraits only.
Volunteers Needed: Two
co-chairs, one per school, as well as several volunteers to help assist
students in taking their best shots on picture day.
Reflections
Each
year the National PTA Reflections program recognizes outstanding student
works in literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.
This committee will distribute Reflections Contest literature to HKMS and
SSES, collect students work, and, with the help of 2-3 persons and school
representatives, judge the work for local level winners. That work is then
submitted to the State PTA Reflections Committee. All entrants and winners
are honored.
Time Commitment: Local
level winners work is submitted in February.
Volunteers Needed: One chair and several volunteers.
Social
Committee
This Committee was recently formed to help bring
parents, faculty and children together just for the fun of it. Activities
include rollerskating, ballgames, ice cream socials, etc.
Time Commitment: Ongoing throughout the year depending on the
scope of the activities undertaken.
Volunteers Needed: One
chair and several volunteers.
Publicity
Committee
This committee contacts the other
committee heads of the PTA on a regular basis to secure news of upcoming
events, write up and arrange to have them publicized in the Scoop/Kool
News and the Courier (if applicable). They should attend PTA events
whenever possible with camera in hand. They also need to maintain contact
with the school principal to keep the PTA informed of upcoming school
events. This committee is vacant at this time and we could really use some
help with this important function.
Education
Committee
(EDCOM)
The Education Committee is dedicated to supporting
and enhancing Easton’s public schools, with respect for the needs of the
entire community. EdCom is committed to providing factual information to
the public to ensure that voters make informed decisions on education
issues. We encourage participation of all segments of Easton’s
population, because we believe that the well-being of the whole town
depends on the health of its schools. A good public education is not only
Easton’s obligation to its children, but also the town’s gift to the
future. For more information about EdCom see the EdCom page on our
website.
Time Commitment: Ongoing
throughout the year.
Volunteers Needed: 2 co-chairs and many volunteers are needed in
all capacities: research and dissemination of education issues,
representation at town meetings, phone calls and signage, etc.
HOT
Program
SSES is a Higher Order Thinking School. The ‘98/’99
school year marks Staples’ fifth year as one of twenty-eight H.O.T.
schools in Connecticut. Through an emphasis on arts integration and
citizenship, our curriculum focuses on Higher Order Thinking Skills. At
the hub of the program is the Magic Mailbox where students can submit
their original writing. These pieces are reveiewed by a student group
known as the Editorial Board and sent on to the various Prodution
Companies. For more information, see the HOT page of our website.
O dyssey
of the Mind
Odyssey of the mind, a PTA
sponsored program, is looking for volunteers to coach teams of students in
grade 2 through 8. This is a great opportunity to work with small groups
of children on a variety of life skills. Odyssey of the Mind entails
solving a problem in one of five categories, and presenting the solution
in a performance skit of no more than eight minutes in length. Also
included in the competition are spontaneous problems, that must be solved
extemporaneously in a short length of time. The CTOM program is run by
volunteers at all levels, and we need your involvement! Check out www.ctom.org
for more information.
Student
Directory
The chairperson
maintains the PTA database throughout the year and publishes a directory
of student names in early October.
Time Commitment:
Maintenance of the records throughout the school year requires a weekly
commitment of approximately 30 minutes. As the year begins, sample
records are sent home, collected, updated and sent to the printer.
Volunteers needed:
Two or three volunteers are sufficient for gathering data and distributing
the directories.
Volunteer
Coordinator
Coordinates
volunteer efforts for chairpersons in need of assistance.
Time
Commitment: Gathering of names begins in September at Parent
Night and continues through receipt of membership forms and at various
affairs during the spring. However, communication with committee
chairs is on going and would actually begin toward the end of
summer. Fortunately, email is a successful tool for this job.
Kaleidoscope
Similar to Superscribes and
Scribblers at Staples, this is a literary magazine showcasing student
work.
Time Commitment:
This is a time intensive job in the spring. Distributing forms to
the school, collecting the student work and coordinating the volunteer
typists (the number needed depends on their abilities and the scope of the
project), and working with a printer.
Staples
Scoop
A weekly newsletter sent home
to every family at SSES. The chairperson collects information and
formats it into a newsletter that provides school, PTA and community
information to the families at the school.
Time Commitment:
Two or three hours per week.
Volunteers Needed:
One Scoop coordinator and many volunteers to help with the copying of the
Scoop.
Celebration
of Books
An opportunity for families to
purchase books for the Media Center and their classroom. Teachers
create a wish list which is available throughout the year. However,
the emphasis is on the book fair week.
Time Commitment:
One intense week in November.
Volunteers Needed:
The chairpersons time commitment is lessened considerably with the
presence of volunteers who will assist with shifts during the book fair.
Baking
Volunteers
